Prostate Cancer Screenings

Mainline Health and Prostate Health International are offering free prostate screening during the month of June and the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson and Methodist Hospital will be scheduling screenings during the month of September.

Prostate cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death among men.

Screening is important because prostate cancer shows no symptoms in its earliest stages.

Screening is recommended for men:

  • ages 40 to 75
  • 35 if African American or Hispanic
  • 35 if there is a family history of prostate cancer

For a free screening, registration is required.

Prostate Screening Day

In September, 2009, Prostate Health International, in conjunction with the Kimmel Cancer Center of Thomas Jefferson University, the Methodist Hospital Division of Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, and Hahnemann University Hospital, held three prostate screening day-long sessions. These began at 8:30 AM and did not end until the last man had completed his testing. The tests included a careful history, a serum PSA, and a digital rectal examination (DRE) conducted by volunteer hospital physicians. Over 700 men were screened.

Here are two of the many comments we have received regarding the event.

"With 250,000 men dying per year from prostate cancer, building awareness about the disease is of utmost importance. Now, through the efforts of the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health and Jefferson, hundreds of men in the Delaware Valley have peace of mind in knowing they've taken the proper steps to ensure they stay healthy. Without the Foundation's gift, we could not have been able to reach as many men as we did."

Leonard Gomella, M.D.
Associate Director of Clinical Affairs at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.

"Both the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson and the Foundation for Breast and Prostate Health are dedicated to enhancing the public's knowledge about prostate cancer detection and prevention. We are extremely grateful for the generous support from the Foundation to help make this year's annual prostate cancer screening event at the Kimmel Cancer Center-Bodine Center for Cancer Treatment the huge success it was. By combining our resources to fight this deadly disease, we were able to screen 400 men in a six-hour period"

Richard Pestell, M.D., Ph. D.
Director of the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson.
